Repousse

In the highest quality traditional metalwork there is often much leaf work and other decorative elements. It is often assumed by the casual observer that this was stamped out in a machine in mass quantities. This is not the case. The craftsmen takes a sheet metal blank and shapes it using hundreds if not thousands of hammer blows using custom made hammers over special stakes to create volume, lines and texture in the piece.
